Remaley, Jean

Jean Remaley, of Penn Hills, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 5, 2016. She was the beloved wife for almost 70 years of the Rev. Charles F. "Red" Remaley Jr.; and loving mother of Carol Ann Johnson, of Atlanta, and Robert Warren Remaley, of Penn Hills. Jean lived a life quietly dedicated to her family and her Christian faith. She served alongside her husband, a retired Methodist minister, at each of the churches he was appointed to lead. For many years she taught Sunday school to fifth and sixth graders, acted as church secretary and participated in many church functions. Frequently, she helped others behind the scenes. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Rosedale United Methodist Church. Jean had a passion for her home, animals, fashion and crafts. She loved to sew and later branched out to creating beautiful crewel and needlepoint pictures and artwork. She took pride in caring for her home, family and the backyard wildlife. She was born Ruth Jean Simpson on Oct. 1, 1925, along with her twin sister, Jane, to Warren Wray Simpson and Ruth Eleanor Whitney Simpson, in Oak Park, Ill. She was raised in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and graduated from Glen Ellyn High School in 1943. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary in Chicago. Also, she volunteered with the Red Cross. During World War II, she began a year and a half correspondence with a Navy sailor she did not know. When he returned from the war, he was sent to Great Lakes Naval Hospital (Chicago, Ill.) where she met him for the first time. Shortly thereafter, she and "Red" were engaged and married in 1946. Jean moved to Red's hometown of Verona. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Jane Simpson Beers; her sister, Laura Ellen Simpson Ritter; an infant daughter; daughter-in-law, Debra Doege Remaley; and son-in-law, Gary Lynn Johnson. Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND ALTERNATIVE SERVICES INC., 421 Allegheny Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139, 412-828-3535.
