VanderVen, Ned Stuart




Ned Stuart VanderVen of Pittsburgh died on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at age 86 at the Willows at Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont. Born in Michigan, he was the first son of the late Stuart T. VanderVen and Ruth VanderVen. Ned attended Michigan public schools, graduated from Harvard University, and earned a doctorate in Physics from Princeton University. With his wife Karen he moved to Pittsburgh in 1961 where he joined the Physics faculty at Carnegie-Mellon University, then the Carnegie Institute of Technology. As an experimental physicist his work focused on low temperature solid state physics and the physics of musical sound. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Physics in 2000. Ned had many interests including athletics and music. A cyclist, he served as President of the Allegheny Cycling Association. He enjoyed classical music, played the piano, and was on the Board of the Renaissance and Baroque Society. His wife, Karen, survives as do his twin children, Elizabeth R. and M. Edwin. He leaves a brother Tom (Cyndi) of Florida, a sister Mary Schwark (William) of Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews. A brother Jack (Marion) predeceased him.
