Charles M. Zibreg, 92, of Verona, died Wednesday morning, December 5, 2018. He was the son of the late Ignac and Sophie Rodak Zibreg and husband of the late Pearl Thompson Zibreg. Born and raised in Verona, Charlie joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 years old during World War II. Upon completion of training, he qualified as a Scout-Sniper and fought valiantly for our freedom in battles at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. Following WWII, he joined the USMC Reserves and was recalled during the Korean War but saw no action during that conflict. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal. He married the love of his life, Pearl Thompson, and settled in Verona and later Penn Hills where they raised their three sons, James and twins Charles and Carl. While working as a linen truck driver, Charlie learned the locksmith trade and worked independently as a locksmith for many years. Upon retirement, Charlie and Pearl lived briefly in Maryland near their sons, and in Florida until Pearl’s death in 2007. Charlie returned to Pennsylvania at that time and lived in Oakmont for several years. In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed golfing with his sons and spending time with his grandchildren. Prior to his death, Charlie lived in Seneca Manor where he enjoyed conversations with other residents and participating in various activities. Charlie was a life member of VFW Post 441, a member of the American Legion, and a long-time member of Verona Eagles Aerie 1634. Charlie is preceded in death by his parents Ignac and Sophie, his beloved wife Pearl, his son Carl, his brothers Richard, George, John, and Joseph Zibreg and his sisters Eleanor Trbovich and Mary Vodvarka.
